“Laurels for Leona”
The Ministerial Road Preservation Association
pays tribute to the memory of
Rep. Leona A. Kelley
|
A true champion of the citizens, Leona A. Kelley worked tirelessly to support efforts to preserve Ministerial Road. In keeping with her well known love of history and the environment, Leona never wavered in her commitment to the cause of Ministerial Road and to her belief that the will of the people should prevail.
An outspoken advocate, Leona attended countless meetings and public hearings and was never more than a phone call away when we needed her. A sponsor of the original legislation which created the RI Scenic Roadways Board, she was a driving force behind the scenic designation of Ministerial Road.
“Laurels for Leona” was a fitting newspaper headline in June of 1999 when our association recognized her at a ceremony held as part of MRPA’s annual Mountain Laurel Day event. It was our privilege to honor her then, and it is with the deepest gratitude that we pay tribute to her memory today.
The next time you drive down Ministerial Road with its tree canopy, mountain laurel and old stone walls, take a moment to think of Leona. Her memory will always remain a part of the scenic treasures she cared so much for.

Remembering
Senator John H. Chafee
A True Guardian
Of Ministerial Road
|
Senator Chafee’s beloved Ministerial Road is still here in all its beauty because of his strong commitment to its preservation. It is extraordinary that a man of his position, dealing daily with so many important issues on a world scale, could care so greatly and do so much for our small, six mile country road. We know also, that this is just one example of the depth of his service to the people of Rhode Island and America.
Senator Chafee was a true guardian of Ministerial Road. We appreciate so much all that he and members of his staff have done over many years to assure that a Rhode Island scenic treasure will be around for the next generation to enjoy. We have the deepest respect for his dedication to preserving vanishing beauty in the world around us.
A dedicated plaque will be erected at the intersection of Routes 110 and 138 in his honor. It will be installed as part of a newly created “gateway” to scenic Ministerial Road which is being designed as part of the State’s upcoming Route 138 reconstruction project.
Senator Chafee’s memory will always be with us as we continue our efforts to protect Ministerial Road. Perhaps this is one small way in which we can honor such an incredible man.
